10. Impart or Implant?

STIMULATE

     1. Jesus' questions were more to stimulate than to get answers. Here He was following His own Father's example, for Jehovah's first question of the entire Bible, "Adam . . . where art thou?" (Genesis 3:9), was asked not because God needed to know, but because Adam needed to know - to recognize his fallen position. Likewise God's second question (Genesis 4:9), "Where is Abel thy brother?" was not a quest for information; God had the information. He was seeking to stir the conscience to arouse Cain to recognize what he had done.

     Likewise Jesus asked His questions largely to make men think and feel. "Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?" (Luke 7:42) is one example. Another is "Shall he not much more clothe you?" (Matthew 6:30).

     Some of Jesus' questions were of the kind we call "rhetorical" - for which no answer was really expected. Others were what we call "leading" questions - whose very form suggests the answer expected. Still others were "dilemma" questions, any answers to which would lead to another question more difficult or even impossible to answer. An example is found in Matthew 21:25: "The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men?" The context explains why His listeners were afraid to answer.
